The Pony Engine
The Pony Engine
The Little Engine That Could, also known as The Pony Engine, is an American classic children's story. The book promotes the values of optimism and hard work, and some think of the book as a metaphor for the American dream and a story of self-discovery.

The story tells of a long train filled with toys that must be pulled over a high mountain. When the happy locomotive pulling the train breaks down, the clown who leads the toys approaches several locomotives for help. For a variety of reasons, they back away:

  • the pompous passenger engine considers the task to be unworthy of his stature
  • the powerful freight engine views the task as unimportant
  • the old, tired engine lacks the strength and determination to help

Not unlike America in 2008, the stranded train is unable to find an engine willing and able to take it over difficult terrain to its destination.

Desperate, the clown asks a little blue yard engine who agrees to try, rises to the occasion, and saves the day by successfully pulling the train over the mountain, while chugging out: "I-think-I-can-I-think-I-can " to get the job done.

Whew! It's a lot like the The Little Pony blog.

(And by the way, the engine Casey Junior relied on the same "I-think-I-can" chug in the train scene in the 1941 Oscar-winning movie Dumbo.)

Optimism and hard work pulled through once more last November to elect the latest US President in a contest that has inspired a nation to start believing in itself again.

Barack Obama, the little engine that could, was a civil rights lawyer and first term Senator from Chicago, Illinois. He was young; he had little legislative experience; and he was black. When he started, they said he didn't have a chance.

The awesome Clinton election machine was a daunting mountain that he had to climb. Could he win the Democratic nomination for President and then win the Presidency itself? Obama started telling people "Yes We Can."

Others started to believe and work hard for him. "Yes We Can" signs started popping up all over America. Like the little yard engine, he rose to the occasion and became the 44th President of the United States, proclaiming to all those watching around the world—"Yes We Could".

Each of us has our own mountain to climb. The little engine, President Obama, The Little Pony, and many others show that with determination and hard work, we can accomplish anything we commitment to achieve.
