WHITECONCEPTS freut sich, das Werk des chinesischen Künstlers Michael Zheng erstmalig in Berlin in einer Einzelausstellung vorzustellen. Vom 24. Juni – 27. Juli 2011 werden in der Ausstellung „I look to the sky and miss the ceiling" neben Videos neue Fotoarbeiten und Skulpturen gezeigt.
Der Performancekünstler, der nach seinem Informatik-Studium an der Tsinghua Universität in China nach San Francisco zog, arbeitete mehr als 10 Jahre als Software Designer in Bay Area/Silicon Valley. Danach verließ er seinen Job und nahm das Studium am San Francisco Art Institute bei Paul Kos, Tony Labat und John Roloff auf, danach studierte er bei Nari Ward und Patty Chang an der Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture.
Sein Werk zeigt Spuren von interventionistischen Denken und Strategien, die kulturelle und soziale Abhängigkeiten auf institutioneller und existentieller Ebene untersuchen. Mit seinem konzeptuellen Ansatz, der von Ernsthaftigkeit, Absurdität und Humor durchdrungen ist, schafft er Situationen, die etablierte Positionen hinterfragen, so dass neue Perspektiven erfahrbar werden. Seine Werke sind durch einen performativen Charakter gekennzeichnet und werden oft in Form von Fotografie, Video und skulpturalen Installationen gezeigt.
Ausstellungen führten den Künstler bereits durch die ganze Welt. 2010 folgte er einer Einladung an das Marina Abramovic Institute in San Francisco, das sich der Profilierung und Dokumentation von Performancekunst widmet. 2009 war Michael Zheng Teilnehmer der Vancouver Biennale in Kanada.
Vom 2. Juli - 28. August 2011 werden Arbeiten von Michael Zheng auch in der Gruppenausstellung „Nomadic Settlers – Settled Nomads" im Kunstraum Kreuzberg / Bethanien Berlin zu sehen sein.

WHITECONCEPTS is pleased to present the first solo exhibition of Chinese artist Michael Zheng in Berlin. From 24 June - 27 July 2011 new photographic works and sculptures next to videos will be exposed in the exhibition "I LOOK TO THE SKY AND MISS THE CEILING".
The performance and conceptual artist studied first computer science at Tsinghua University in China, then moved to San Francisco, where he worked more than 10 years as a software designer in Bay Area / Silicon Valley. After that he decided to study at the San Francisco Art Institute with Paul Kos, Tony Labat and John Roloff. He also studied with Nari Ward and Patty Chang at Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture.
His work shows traces of interventionist thinking studying cultural and social dependence on institutional and existential levels. With his conceptual approach, which is steeped in sincerity, absurdity and humor, he creates situations, questioning the established positions so that new perspectives can be experienced. His works are characterized by a performative character and are often shown in the form of photographs, video and sculptural installations.
Exhibitions led the artist already all over the world. In 2010 he had an exhibition at the Marina Abramovic Institute in San Francisco, which is dedicated to profiling and documentation of performance art. In 2009 Michael Zheng was a participant in the Vancouver Biennale in Canada.
